Today I left cold and wet Dallas and headed 5 hours west to Midland, TX. I'm on my way to Big Bend National Park which is 8+ hours west of Dallas and wanted to get the majority of the drive out-of-the-way today. Not much here in Midland - although it is the birthplace of George W and Laura Bush.

I left Dallas behind - sure was a lot of rain and fog there which slowly dissipated as I headed west. The sun was just starting to peek out as I got to Midland at 4PM. .
I immediately went to the Petroleum Museum which is just down the road from my hotel. I had expected it to be pretty rinky-dink but they actually did a nice job of telling the history of the petroleum industry which is centered here in Midland - the museum closed at five and I actually wish I would've had a little extra time. Inside the museum there were lots of exhibits and then outside there was a junkyard of old oil rigs.
The area around here is a reddish sand with scrub brush and thorns. That's pretty much it! It's generally flat and sure looks a lot different than things do at home in Maine!
