So it's about a 2 Hour Dr. from Alexandria VA to the northern entrance of Shenandoah national park. Shenandoah is known for its "Skyline Drive" which is a 109 mile Ridgeline Road that traverses the park from north to south. There are dozens of scenic turnouts along the road overlooking the Shenandoah Valley and many trails (including the Appalachian Trail) that run throughout the park. I took the Compton pass trail and the Appalachian Trail to a basalt rock formation. It's pretty cool how lava flowed through cracks and formed into these hexagonal shapes. there were some spotty showers but it didn't my spirits and it made some beautiful clouds and views.

I exited the southern end of the park around 4:30 PM and made it to my hiker Hostel just before dark. I won't go into detail about the Hostel here but next time anyone gets together with me we can have a few laughs over a few drinks about my experience. 😂

That's a lovely drive. We did it on our honeymoon half a century ago. DC to NY to Hatteras and back home up the eastern shore. :-)
